What’s In My Heart
What’s In My Heart
By David Stoddard
With Valentine’s Day being tomorrow, I started wondering to myself just what in the world matters to me? Who in my life would I have a difficult time living without? What few possessions truly mean the most to me? What activities fill my heart and soul with joy?
On the surface, this day is meant for showing appreciation to those who mean the most in our lives. For letting people know how much we love and care for them. And for getting really full by eating chocolate covered strawberries and those candy heart things with the writing on them.
While all of those things are important with regard to this day, (I’ll get back to you on the chocolate part), it also helps to look closer at ourselves on a more personal level. To list what we care about, what we feel inside about the people in our lives.
I try to write them down or type them out. There’s just something about seeing this list printed out that makes it more permanent or something. We all have thoughts in our heads. We “know” the people who are important to us, we know what we enjoy doing or having, we know what means the most in our lives. But its great to actually see how much is on our lists at times.
We hear so many stories of people who for one reason or other just don’t see how much they have in their lives. They don’t realize the talents they have, the people they matter to, the opportunities that await them or the lives they touch each day. The list goes on and on. But they don’t “see” it as though they matter.
We all may go through our own moments when we feel like tossing our hands up and feeling that it just doesn’t matter. Hey, it happens. This week alone at the day job, we’ve had 2 power outages, a fire, a water main break and the printer/copier still doesn’t work even after 2 people came in to “fix” it. It’s almost like what’s the point of coming in the rest of the week.
But, back to Valentine’s Day.
Go out there and buy the chocolates and candies, buy the roses, buy the jewelry, the greeting cards, the candles, the romantic music and the hot-air popcorn popper. Make it a special day for those you care about, and let them know you are thinking of them,
But be sure to take some time to write out your list of what matters to you, who matters to you, and especially who you matter to as well. Make this a special day for yourself. You’ll see what you’re heart’s been set on all this time.
And now a simple question.
What is your heart set on?
